Commander's
Message
I am
really having fun as your new Commander! It has given me an
opportunity to talk to many more Post members. This helps me
to evaluate where we are, where we’re going and how to get
there. By the time you read this, the air conditioning will
be working at peak performance. The air quality is being
addressed and fixed. We are in preliminary talks about a
piece of property directly across US 1 for a new Post home.
Our State Commander will visit our Post for a dinner in his
honor. We will have attended the 12th District Picnic
supporting Boy’s & Girl’s State and participated in many
other functions. You can’t say that there is nothing to do
at 318!
Which brings me to the following: Support your Post. Attend
the events. Come to Wednesday night dinners. You can’t eat
at home cheaper. Play bingo. We had a small crowd for the
Inaugural Bingo, but had a great time! Tom & Daryl did a
great job of organizing & running the games. Drop in for
karaoke. It’s fun. Steak night is another outstanding
bargain. The list of events goes on and on. But you get the
message.
Lastly, but mostly: The Member of the Month is the energizer
bunny! He is a member of the Honor Guard, does the Post
Newsletter & runs the Texas Hold’Em. I salute you Dick
Boulette! Be sure to congratulate Dick when you see him!
Jim
Burk, Commander

Constitution
& By-laws Vote
NOTICE TO ALL LEGION MEMBERS
A VOTE IS REQUIRED!
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP
MEETING, SAT, OCTOBER 4, 2008
Item 1:
At the request of the district’s Judge Advocate, we have
amended our proposed changes to the Post’s Constitution &
now must hold a vote to validate this small change. Note:
This proposed amendment was read aloud at last month’s
general membership meeting & can be viewed at the Post or by
visiting the Post’s website.
Item 2:
The property search committee had identified a vacant parcel
of land across the street behind the Hess Gas Station. This
1.5 acre tract appears to be ideal for our purposes of
building a permanent Post home. The cost is reasonable, it
has great access and it’s close by. The “due-diligence” part
of this acquisition is not without cost to the membership;
and a (possibly non-refundable) deposit will also be
required; therefore your board of directors must have
membership approval to move forward before tendering an
offer to the owners. We encourage you to participate in this
very important decision.

November Legion Meetings
Due to
financial constraints - getting reports ready, the E-Board &
General Meeting will be held on
Saturday, Nov. 8 at the usual times.

A little note to all of you at Post
318. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and prayers during my
hospital stay and my recuperation. A special prayer to you,
Robin Tucker. Bless all of you and I hope to see you soon!

Honor/Color Guard
First let me congratulate Jack McCarthy for
getting the Honor Guard Member of The Year Award. Jack is
always there for us for any task, from cleaning the rifles,
doing funerals to flag disposal.
The Honor Guard really shined at the PGA Patriot Day
festivities. We will try to get photos to put in the next
newsletter, great job men.
The purpose of the Honor Guard is to honor the veterans who
have been assigned to Post Everlasting, whether is the full
graveside honors, funeral parlor or even at times at the
homes of the survivors. If the veteran is eligible we can
and will be more than ready to assist the families.
I want to thank the new members of the Color Guard for
posting the Colors for the new officers. Come to the 2nd or
4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm to check us out.

President's message
Hi
Ladies!
Autumn
is upon us & there is much to be done & much to enjoy!
Starting the 1st of October, we will be selling Halloween
“hang ups” for a $1 donation for veteran’s programs. Be sure
to ask the bartenders for one, or two!
The District held a training session at Post #126 last month,
which gave the officers a lot of information about our
work-plan for the year. On that note, I am looking for
committee volunteers. The plan of work covers a number of
Veteran, Children, Education & Patriotism programs, as well
as committees to help us operate the best Unit in the
District! I would appreciate your participation. Just give
me a call.
I also attended the District meeting at Post #117 in Palm
Bay. The report on membership puts us at 98% for last year.
Get the word out & let’s all do our best to make sure our
current members renew & that we also look for new members as
well. I suggest carrying a membership application in your
purse for the occasion that you may meet a perspective
member. Linda has ordered new application & they should be
in the stand on the display case shortly. Hopefully, you
have received your renewal notices. Although we all voted to
raise the dues this year, that information didn’t make it’s
way to National, so we must leave the dues at $20 for 08-09
term. Anybody who has already paid the extra $5, please see
our Treasurer Margaret for a refund. When you send in your
renewal, please remember to cross off the PO Box #; it is
incorrect.

To The Members of Squadron 318
Hi
everyone, just want to take a minute & tell you about my
first meeting as Commander. We had a great turnout, & I was
touched when Andy presented me with the S.A.L. Member of the
Year Award! This was to be presented to me at the
Commander's Dinner, but I was unable to attend. Thank you
Andy & Members!
We are already planning our Thanksgiving & Christmas events.
Once again the SAL will be involved in feeding the less
fortunate. We will be working with local organizations. If
there is any family truly in need that you know of, please
see me at the Post and we will see what we can do.
This year our Christmas Party will be for approx. 40 foster
children that are desperately in need. NO child should go
without at Christmas & we are going to make sure they don’t.
We’re going to throw them a party like they never seen
before! We will be putting up a donation board in the Post
for anyone who would like to donate.
We decided to purchase a laptop computer with a printer,
router, the whole package. We will be selling tickets now
till the last Saturday of Nov. Brenda will purchase this for
us. THANKS Brenda.
Planned Activities: A B.B.Q., bus trip to gamble while
visiting other Posts, fishing trip?, & a few other
surprises. Lasagna Dinner—huge hit! It takes 3 days to bring
this meal that is all homemade. Thank you Andy & Brenda.
Thank you all!
Tommy Bowes, SAL Commander
