Commander's
Message
Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Sons & Riders
As this is my last Commander’s Message, I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for
your help and contributions during the past year. It
was my pleasure and honor to serve as the Post Commander and
I look forward to insuring that VetsFest 2 will be bigger
and better than last year.
Now that the elections are finally over, I would like to
congratulate all the new officers on their respective
elected positions. I am sure that everyone will encourage
and support these individuals during the coming year. We
also discussed and ratified changes to our Constitution and
By-Laws. They must now be sent to Department for approval.
Our Post 318 Day at Goodyear was a huge success! I want to
thank Goodyear for their donation of a new set of tires.
The tires were won by Jacqueline McKay. Goodyear will also
be donating a set of new tires to be raffled off at VetsFest
in November.
Finally, the month’s MEMBER OF THE MONTH is Legionnaire David
Farren. David is the service manager of the Goodyear store
and was instrumental in getting their support for the Post
318 Day. Again, thanks and congratulations on a job well
done.
Frank Howard, Commander

Chaplain's Corner
Post 318
I
have visited many sick Comrades, neighbors and friends over
the years and it still amazes me how just a few kind words
of sympathy can raise and individual’s spirits. Just by
taking the time to show a person that someone cares about
them and is praying for their recovery can work miracles.
When a person is sick or disabled, nothing is more important
than a familiar face, a familiar voice and the camaraderie
of someone you know; Everyone enjoys talking with their
friends, families and acquaintances. Friendships are a
precious thing for which there are no substitutes.
Let each of us be kind to our sick and disabled. Whenever
possible offer them a helping hand, warm thought and a
comforting prayer. Remember to pray for those who are ill
and confined.

Hunter, Otto Kahl, and Conrad Tutela
THOUGHT FOR

THANKS
To all the members that attended the memorial
service at Veterans Park on Memorial Day. In the passed 22
years that I have attended this memorial this was the best
showing that I remember attending. It was nice to see the
young who are the future of our country there this year. The
bank playing all the old songs and the young children
singing made one think how proud we are to be an American.
There was such a beautiful breeze which made the flags wave
like never before. Of course you always have the old timers
telling stories of the good old days and how proud they are
to be able to attend the service. I saw tears on some of
their faces when we saluted the Flag and sang the National
Anthem and God Bless America. You could see on their faces
how it brought back memories of their comrades of pass wars.
Hoping next years service will even be double of this years
and may we all keep our service men and women in our prayers
to return safely home soon.
Sick List: Rose
Whelan, Shirley Barbara, Ann Hunter and Eileen Lane
Pray for these members of the Auxiliary to get well soon.
Please call me if you know someone
sick or in distress.
May God put a healing hand on all of you. MATTIE KELLY, Chaplain, PH# 879-7095

membership dues to
increase
I
would like to take this opportunity to explain to the
membership a little history on annual dues. I joined the
Post in 1991 and the dues were $20. They remained at that
amount until 1995 when they were raised to $25. The
membership dues remained $25 for the next 12 years. 2 years
ago, National Headquarters raised the dues $4.50 a year at
the local level. thus prompting a $5 a year increase by our
Post. Well we are now approaching our 2009 dues, & at the
State Convention in July we will pick up the dues cards for
the upcoming year which at that time will include the
increase for the coming year.
Allow me to explain how this increase works. Last October the
State of Florida American Legion implemented a $2 a year
increase. At the time the E-Board did not want to raise the
dues so closely on the heels of the last increase so
consequently the Post absorbed the increase without passing
it on to the membership. It is no longer financially
feasible to continue this way. After much discussion the
E-Board has decided to raise the dues to $35 starting with
the 2009 dues. Let me explain how this $5 breaks down. Two
dollars a year will go to the State of Florida American
Legion and the other three dollars will go directly into our
building fund so that as the Post grows so will our building
fund and hopefully (finger crossed) we will finally get the
Post home we all deserve.
Hopefully this explanation will answer some of your questions
or concerns. If you have any other concerns please attend
the next or any other Post Membership Meeting.
Arnie Thompson, Adjutant
