Commander's
Message
Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Sons And Riders
I
would like to remind everyone that Election Day for Officers
is June 6 from noon to 8pm. This year the unofficial
results will be announced and posted after the votes are
tallied. I encourage all Legionnaires to come out and vote.
Your vote is important. The next day, June 7, is our regular
General Membership meeting. I would like to see you all
there for the meeting when the official results of the
election are read. We will also be discussing and ratifying
any changes to our Constitution and By-Laws.
Our Memorial Day function was a huge success. I want to thank
the Sons for preparing and serving their outstanding clams
and chowder. Also a big thanks to the volunteers for making
it all happen. I also want to thank our Honor Guard &
Chaplains for their participation in the Memorial Day
service here at the Post. As I said at this service,
“Remember all those who have paid the
ultimate price and veterans of all wars. Honor them by
remembering… freedom is their gift to us.”
Finally, this months’ MEMBER OF THE MONTH is Ray Calnen. Ray
is a member of the SONS. He and his crew did an outstanding
job of resurfacing the sidewalks outside our Post. His
professionalism can be seen in the quality of his work.
Again, thanks and congratulations on a job well done.

legion
riders
Greetings to the Post members
It’s hard to believe that it has been almost a year as the
Rider Commander. Here is slate of officer for the next year:
Commander - Ed Sandora
1st Vice - Jim O’Rourke,
2nd Vice - Brenda
Peterson
Secretary - Stacy Jones,
Treasurer - Bill Skyard,
Sgt-At-Arms - Paul
Scozzafava,
Chaplain - Carol LoGrasso.
Historian & Liason are appointed positions by the incoming
Commander. I want to thank everyone at the Post for their
support of the Riders and I during my tenure as Rider
Commander. I’m looking forward to continuing as a Legion
Rider.
I would like to remind everyone about our upcoming raffle. We
have a
“Wheelbarrow Of Cheer”
filled with
plenty of goodies for gardening & relaxing after a hard day
in the sun. Please see one of the Riders or your favorite
bartender for tickets, $1 each or 6 for $5.
Good luck!
We are also working on our Annual Poker Run
which will be Sunday, July 27. Don’t forget, you don’t need
a motorcycle to participate in the run. We hope to see you
all for a day of fun. Thanks again for your support!
Greg Emerson, Legion Rider Commander

membership dues to
increase
I
would like to take this opportunity to explain to the
membership a little history on annual dues. I joined the
Post in 1991 and the dues were $20. They remained at that
amount until 1995 when they were raised to $25. The
membership dues remained $25 for the next 12 years. 2 years
ago, National Headquarters raised the dues $4.50 a year at
the local level. thus prompting a $5 a year increase by our
Post. Well we are now approaching our 2009 dues, & at the
State Convention in July we will pick up the dues cards for
the upcoming year which at that time will include the
increase for the coming year.
Allow me to explain how this increase works. Last October the
State of Florida American Legion implemented a $2 a year
increase. At the time the E-Board did not want to raise the
dues so closely on the heels of the last increase so
consequently the Post absorbed the increase without passing
it on to the membership. It is no longer financially
feasible to continue this way. After much discussion the
E-Board has decided to raise the dues to $35 starting with
the 2009 dues. Let me explain how this $5 breaks down. Two
dollars a year will go to the State of Florida American
Legion and the other three dollars will go directly into our
building fund so that as the Post grows so will our building
fund and hopefully (finger crossed) we will finally get the
Post home we all deserve.
Hopefully this explanation will answer some of your questions
or concerns. If you have any other concerns please attend
the next or any other Post Membership Meeting.

Dart League Update
Our Spring Dart League on
Thursday nights was a huge success with 20 members playing
in the 8 week league.
The top three finishers were Harold Barth, Bob Booth and Fred
Mastermaker. Congratulations go out to these three. We will
be starting up our Summer 8 Week Dart League on July 11. If
you have interest in playing in the league I would ask that
you contact Arnie or Kim at the Post or just come in and put
your name on the signup sheet.. Our summer format will be
the same as the Spring, 8 weeks of play, 1 week of playoffs,
award presentations with great food from our kitchen.

ELECTION DAY!
If you don’t
vote, then don’t complain about those that were voted in or
how they are running things. Remember, that if you don’t
vote you are giving free reign to those that do. It is
vitally important that you vote for not only our post
officers, but in every election that comes down the pike.
Apathy is the best friend our enemies have. Some of us have
fought them on the battlefield, and have since laid down our
arms. But, never should we put down our guard. Americans
don’t have any reason to fear any outside enemy, but should
be ever vigilant for those that would weaken us from within.

Veteran’s Employment Outreach
On Thursday, June 12 from noon to 4pm, the
Post, in conjunction with the Work Force Board of the
Treasure Coast, will be putting on a Veteran’s Employment
Outreach event. The Veteran’s Representatives from the Fort
Pierce One Stop Career Center will be on hand to assist
local Veterans seeking employment with job searches,
registration in Employ Florida Marketplace and resume
review.
If you are a veteran looking for work, I encourage you to
attend. While there are no guarantees that you will walk
away with a job opportunity, these guys really know their
stuff and will be available to help you be successful in
your employment search.

Honor/Color Guard
We know it has been a while since you heard
from us, but we just want all of our members to know, that
we are still going strong and are available to honor any
veteran that is entitled to it. All you have to do is call
the Post @878-0655 or go to our website
www.americanlegion318fl.org. At the Honor Guard section
there is a form you can fill out and send to the
Sergeant-At-Arms.
