Commander's
Message
Hello
Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Sons, and Riders
Here we are starting a brand new year at the Post. As most of
you are aware, our Legion year runs from August thru July
for all elected Officers. All membership dues are now due
for the 2006-2007 year. I ask that all members, of all
organizations renew your membership as soon as possible.
Early-Bird cutoff ends at the end of September, so I ask you
to send them in now.
In 2005-2006 we accomplished our very important goal of 100%
in every organization of our Post. Why? Because of the
direction that our Post is going. So many members are so
proud of our Post, and many new members are coming in
because each one has stated that our Post is the best that
they have ever seen. They state that Post 318 offers so much
for their members and everyone they meet are so friendly and
receptive.
At the State Convention I had the pleasure of meeting several
Department, Area, and District Officers, who stated how
impressed they were with the efforts of all organizations
from Post 318. They expressed their heartfelt thanks for the
many successful programs each group had accomplished this
past year. I want each member of Post 318 to be proud of
those efforts and let others know how well we have done.
This past year, we as a Post gave $83,000.00 worth back to
the Community, Veterans, and other deserving individuals. A
feat that other Posts only dream of doing. But we made it
happen. I am so very proud of all members who worked so hard
to make this happen, for those who really need it the most.
We will be recognizing those members at the annual
Commanders Appreciation Dinner on August 13th. I ask members
to please attend and give support for those who have done so
much for the Post. Member of the Year Award will be given
out that day.
This month I would like to make Tyler Schmeer our Member of
the Month. Every time I look around, it seems Tyler is
always there to help the Post. I salute you Tyler.

Vice-Commander
I would like to thank all members for their trust and
confidence in electing me as your new 1st Vice. I will do my
utmost to follow in the footsteps of "Babe" to insure all
membership services are completed in a correct and timely
manner. Secondly, the Post was recognized at the recent
Department Convention in Orlando for achieving 100% in our
membership for 2006. We are off to a pretty good start with
the 2007 dues. By the time you get this newsletter, we
should have received approximately 425+ dues ( over 50% of
our goal for 2007 ). As a matter of note, the fiscal year
for 2007 dues runs from July 1, 2006 thru June 30, 2007.
Regardless of when you paid your 2006 dues, the above dates
apply for 2007. My personal goal for this New Year is to
achieve 100% membership renewal by April 1, 2007. Your help
and support in sending in your renewal membership will be
needed for me to achieve this goal. Again, thanks and good
luck in the coming year.
Frank Howard, 1st Vice-Commander

Legion
riders
I just returned from the state American Legion Convention.
If you as a Legion member , Son, or Auxiliary, have never
been to one, you should go next year. I was impressed by the
thousands that were in Orlando for this. The amount of
fellowship and good will was overwhelming.
The Riders recently participated in a fund raiser for Luke
Murphy, An Army Sgt. that was critically wounded in Iraq.
The benefit was to raise money to send his family to Walter
Reed Hospital in Washington to see him. There is a
foundation spearheaded by Rick Monday ( the former Los
Angeles Dodger ) that stopped 2 protestors from burning the
American flag at a baseball game in the 70's, that is
involved in this worthy cause. And now Post 318 Legion
Riders are involved as well.
Another cause we recently signed up for is The Patriot Guard.
It seems that there are a group of protesters headquartered
in the Midwest that go around protesting at veterans
funerals. The Patriot Guard was started by Legion Riders and
other motorcycle groups to escort grieving families at these
sacred ceremonies. They placed themselves between the
funeral attendees and the protesters. For more information
on this go to
www.PatriotGuard.org .

I hope everyone is having a nice summer. We are into a new
year and we have functions and activities planned and hope
to have another great year. Last year our total donations
were over $25,000 for veterans and the community. WOW!! What
a great year. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make
it happen with their time, hard work and generous donations.
We attended the Convention in July. Harold Barth, Ron
Christian, Greg Emerson and myself had a good time and
learned a lot of things to have a successful year again. We
received awards for 1st runner up for year-end reports,
Special Olympics and membership.
I welcome the new elected officers and look forward to
working with all of you. Our SAL meetings and dinners will
be starting up in September and we also have Oktoberfest
planned. Be sure to watch the newsletter for times and
dates.
TOGETHER WE CAN ALL WORK HARD, HAVE FUN
AND GIT-R-DONE!!!

Dear Post 318 Members,
I would like to take a moment to thank all of your members
who turned in used cell phones for the Cell Phones For
Soldiers project (www.cellphonedforsoldiers.com). As you
know, these telephones are turned into a re-cycler, who then
gives credit and the foundation can furnish a service member
overseas with a calling card.
Making the ultimate sacrifice at times, our men and women of
the Armed Forces continue to serve us proudly. This project,
helping them to establish contact with their loved one is
the least we can do.
Please do not hesitate to call me if I can be of further
assistance.
Sincerely,
Master Officer
Tim Reilly, Executive Director
